Official Biography

Doris Harper-Wills is a Guyanese born London-based artist and author. In England, she attended Rose Bruford School of Speech and Drama (Sidcup, Kent) Avery Hill College of Education (Bexley) and Laban Art of Movement Studios where she studied English, Drama and Educational Dance. She showcases Caribbean culture through her choreography, storytelling, and artistic directing, weaving in song, dance, and drama. Both Doris' journey as a language teacher and professional experiences have influenced her approach to storytelling and performance. Doris' programs have taken place since 1966 in London, UK; New York, USA; The Yukon, Canada; Zimbabwe, Africa; and Georgetown, Guyana. Her work includes Guyana Independence celebrations in 1966, Carifesta '72 in Guyana and London Entertains in the UK. Doris is a true Windrush legend who has pioneered Caribbean folklore in Britain. Since 1991, Doris' work has mainly featured in UK schools where she choreographs seasonal programs showcasing Caribbean folklore through drama, song, and dance. In 2013 Doris released her popular paperback "The Wings of Iere: Amerindian Legends" - a collection of stories and songs adapted from the Amerindian Oral Tradition rewritten to appeal to readers of all ages.
